NUKULUK

Nukuluk is a South London collective made up of Syd (vocals, production, guitar), Monika (vocals), Louis (drums, sampler), Olivia (synth, sampler) and Mateo (bass). Bold and in your face, their music is packed with broken-sounding drumbeats and shadowy synths. Nukuluk may sound warmly reminiscent of childhood, of the early 2000s...the tail-end of the rave and trip-hop era, but with a fresh fierceness. They released their debut EP DISASTER POP last month, featuring first singles 'Oooh Ah' and 'Feel So'. 'Feel So' is track written during early lockdown, where Syd expresses a "feeling of helplessness in front of widespread social crisis: a lack of support or care being extended to those in need, an unforgiving world that wouldn’t listen to those on its fringes," whilst Monika details his frustration with "the racist immigration and welfare systems which grind people down". 'Nu Year' shows a more sensitive side of Nukuluk, exposed by Syd's soft vocals, a lazy beat and emotive synth twinkles. Made from drum machine, glitchy electronics and reverb-soaked bass, 'Disaster Pop' sees Monika's most impressive vocal delivery, detailing his anxiety and drooling his punchy doomsday bars. Closing the EP, 'Rain' is a pretty out-there track with experimental production, pitching the word 'rain' at different pitches to create the notes. Signed to small Bristol-based label called Spinny Nights, and partly-self-managed, Nukuluk have made an impressive stamp on the London music scene, with jam-packed gigs at The Social and Brixton Windmill, bursting with raw energy. -Ellie Rose-Davies
